The companies themselves sharply denied the report. "There is absolutely no chance that Nintendo will buy Sega," Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi said in a statement. Sega released a similar statement on its Japanese Web site saying, in part, that the company "would like to announce that such report is completely false, and would like to deny all reports related to the matter." The New York Times, citing unidentified executives "close to the negotiations," reported that the companies have been talking for months and a deal "could still collapse."
